A recent article in the Tennessean brought home to us the simple fact that – “Young women in Middle Tennessee are missing school as often as monthly for a simple reason – they can’t afford feminine hygiene products when they’re on their periods.”
It would be easy to understand that this problem could be happening in under-developed countries, but not in the richest nation on earth. Unfortunately, thousands of students lack the resources to manage basic menstrual hygiene and therefore, are denied equal learning opportunities.
While we are beginning to see some change, there is still a lot to be done right here in Clarksville, TN. To end this disparity in teen girl hygiene, we must first understand the problem. We must first acknowledge that far too many students in our Montgomery County and surrounding county schools are unable to afford basic health products like tampons and pads. Once we acknowledge the problem, we can then take the steps that we need to end the problem and ensure everyone has access to feminine hygiene products they need to live and thrive.
Friends of Aunt Flo was established for the purpose of educating the people of Clarksville, TN about this devastating problem that effects homeless girls and women, as well as, our school students. Imagine for a moment that you had to start your day today without brushing your teeth, combing your hair or changing socks. Then imagine having your period and all you had to rely on was a crumpled newspaper or old food wrappers.
Just because people have no home or are poor doesn’t mean they have no dignity. Being homeless is a devastating experience that can wipe away a person’s self-esteem. For a woman or girl living on the streets, the feeling of hopelessness and helplessness is magnified ten times.
We ask for your help in educating the Clarksville community about the personal dilemmas facing our homeless girls and women and our teens in Montgomery County schools. There are many ways you can help from monetary donations, holding a charitable event, buying hygiene products or just helping write the scripture verse/encouragement cards that go in each of our bags of hope.
If you have questions about Friends of Aunt Flo or would like to discuss a speaking engagement for your church or organization, just get in touch and we will be glad to address your concern.
